BRIGHTON FESTIVAL OF WORLD SACRED MUSIC
Brighton Festival of World Sacred Music was founded to promote understanding and tolerance between people of different faiths – and none – through something that we can all share: the love of beautiful music. The festival features more than 200 performers from major faith traditions, including Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Islamic, Jewish, Pagan and Sikh.
This unique festival – which focuses on the theme ‘East’ – brings together world-class international artists from India, Japan, China, the Middle East and Eastern Europe alongside local Sussex talent. Highlights include: a glimpse into Japanese temple life with Shomyo Buddhist monks Shichiseikai; spectacular Kathakali dance-drama from South India; stunning Ladino diva Mor Karbasi from Israel; and the exquisite harmonies of the award-winning London Bulgarian Choir.
A troupe of ecstatic Sufi whirling dervishes will bring a new twist to this year’s festival. Festival-goers can learn how to whirl at special Whirling Workshops; find out more about the Sufi tradition at the festival’s first Symposium; and immerse themselves in this mystic musical tradition at a spectacular Sufi and Mystic Music Night.
Plus Sussex-based environmental arts group Red Earth will create a week-long series of free events, workshops and dusk performances at the Chattri Memorial on the South Downs.
